Construction Update — BLUE section 8/28/24

Construction update from RCOC

This Week

  • Verdeterre is preparing locations for Doan to place concrete on W. Glengarry Circle.

  • Doan and GM & Sons will be pouring concrete curb and driveways on remaining prepared areas on Hamilton, Overhill, N. Williamsbury, and W. Glengarry Circle.

  • Mike’s Landscaping will be out making repairs.

  • Contractors will stop work and clear out of the neighborhood for the holiday weekend by 3 pm on Friday. There will be no construction work over Labor Day weekend.

Next week

  • Verdeterre will continue preparing locations for Doan to place concrete.

  • Doan and GM & Sons will be pouring concrete curb and driveways starting on Burning Bush, then Ardmoor then Hupp Cross. Notices will be posted on front doors of impacted residents about 48 hours in advance.

  • Mike’s Landscaping will be out making repairs.

Driveway access restrictions and parking during curbing process

Concrete work, which includes concrete curbs and driveway approaches, will continue in the BLUE section the week after Labor Day. As a reminder, this curbing process includes removal of temporary driveway approaches, pouring concrete curbs, laying concrete driveway approaches and allowing the concrete to cure. Residents will not have access to their driveways for about two weeks, starting from the day the driveway approach is removed. This allows time for the concrete curbs/driveway approaches to cure before there is vehicle traffic on them. See more information on the curbing process and related limitations on driveway access and parking restrictions HERE.

Residents who will be impacted by the concrete work will be notified about 48 hours in advance with a notice on front doors. The notice will include the date on which the work is expected to start. Vehicles should be moved from driveways/garages and parked elsewhere prior to 7 am on the date indicated to avoid being blocked in for the two-week period.

In the PINK section, contractors are now working in the northern part of the section, west of Cranbrook. In order to store necessary materials closer to the work, Oak Blvd will be closed in the one block between Covington and Yarmouth. Drivers will have to detour around the closure for at least 2-3 weeks (maybe longer) and should plan alternate routes. Accessing Oak Blvd. from Cranbrook will likely be the best option.

School bus routes

The Road Commission has been in contact with Birmingham Public Schools Transportation Department, making them aware of the road construction. BPS will make the final decision on bus routes and communicate with impacted families.

Looking ahead ………

The week of September 9, concrete work (curbs and driveway approaches) will continue on the west side of the BLUE section with Wooddale, Wooddale Court, Half Moon, Roland and Tuckahoe. Once the concrete currently being laid in the eastern part of the section (Overhill, N. Williamsbury, Hamilton, W. Glengarry Circle) has cured, curb removal and underdrain installation will begin on the second side of these streets. Later in September, milling and grading will begin in the BLUE section, in preparation for paving.

Milling and grading operations will be starting September 4 on PINK section streets east of Cranbrook. The contractor will be avoiding Oak Blvd. for the time being, but Yarmouth and Pine east of Cranbrook, Waddington, Tilbury, Tilbury Place and S. Bradway will be impacted by milling and paving. There can be no street parking during these operations, and equipment will move slowly down the street. Drivers will want to detour around the milling and grading equipment, using adjacent blocks to detour. Paving on these streets will start the week of September 9. Streets will be completely closed to all traffic on the day they are paved. Residents who utilize these streets as part of their normal routes to school, work or other activities will want to plan alternatives. See additional information on timing of milling and grading for each street HERE.

Reminders

Please avoid parking during the workday on any street where there is active road construction and ensure any contractors/workers at your home understand and follow this guidance. Our streets are just not wide enough to accommodate construction equipment, traffic and parking at the same time. Limiting traffic on streets with active construction would also be a big help.

For questions or issues during construction, please contact Wayne Dabrowski at 248-858-4862 or wdabrowski@rcoc.org.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this project.
