Construction update - PINK section 9/18/24 (updated for corrected paving date of 9/20/24)

Construction update from RCOC

This week

  • Ajax will finish paving the western part of Pine Street and the northern part of Yarmouth east of Cranbrook tomorrow, 9/18 Friday, 9/20. This work was planned for Wednesday 9/18, but could not be completed due to early closure of the asphalt plant. These streets will be closed to traffic and parking tomorrow until the asphalt has cooled sufficiently. Residents will want to plan alternate routes to avoid Pine Street and the northern part of Yarmouth east of Cranbrook on Friday 9/20. Residents on Yarmouth and Pine should place their trash at the curb as usual; Ajax will work with Priority Waste to get the trash picked up as scheduled.

  • Springline will continue removing curb and driveway approaches on Yarmouth and Oak west of Cranbrook, Dorstone and Tottenham. As a reminder, when driveway approaches are removed, they will be replaced with a temporary stone approach. However, there can be a delay of up to an hour between the removal and the placement of the temporary stone. Residents will want to allow extra time when this work to accomodate any delay.

  • Mike’s Landscaping is out making repairs and prepping for restoration on N. Glenhurst and Westwood. Residents can expect topsoil to be installed in the area between the sidewalk and street next week, with sod to follow next week or early the following week. The sprinkler crew will be moving on from Glenhurst/Westwood to Waddington, Tilbury etc. to perform sprinkler repairs on those streets.

Next week

  • Springline will continue curb and driveway approach removals and begin underdrain installation on Yarmouth and Oak west of Cranbrook, Tottenham and Dorstone.

  • Mike’s Landscaping will be laying topsoil and then sod on N. Glenhurst and Westwood. The sprinkler crew will continue making repairs on streets that have received the first layer of asphalt.

  • Storm drain structures will be lined starting next week on the streets that have been paved. This work will involve blocking about half of the street near each drain with equipment and workers; the road will not be closed to traffic, but residents may experience some delays in navigating around the equipment. This work will start on N. Glenhurst, then to Westwood, Waddington, Tilbury, Tilbury Place, Yarmouth, etc.

Paving operations and parking alternatives

More detail on the paving process is provided HERE. For residents on the northern part of Yarmouth, parking on Waddington or Raynale would be good options. For residents on Pine Street, Tilbury Road or Waddington would be alternatives. Please do not park on Yarmouth west of Cranbrook as curb and driveway removal will be taking place in that area on the paving day.

Looking ahead . . .

Concrete work (curbs and driveway approaches) will begin on Yarmouth and Oak west of Cranbrook, Tottenham and Dorstone as early as the week of September 30. During the concrete work, residents will not have driveway access for about two weeks. See additional information about the curbing process and driveway access/parking limitations HERE. Milling, grading and paving will follow once the concrete is cured, likely later in October.

For streets that have received the first layer of asphalt, restoration work will continue for the next several weeks — sprinkler repair, then topsoil, then sod. Once the restoration work is completed, the second and final layer of paving will be scheduled, likely toward the end of October. During the second lift of paving, the road will be closed on the paving day and likely into the following day as the asphalt cools and hardens.

Other reminders . . .

During the period between the first and second layers of asphalt, the pavement is lower than the curb. If it rains, water will pool in the street during this time because the drains (in the curb) are higher than the water the street.

Given how congested the streets are with construction, we are asking residents to avoid parking during the workday on any street where there is construction activity. Once the workers leave for the evening, street parking is fine until 7 am the next morning. Please remove vehicles parked overnight on the street before 7 am.

Additionally, while one side of the street is usually open for traffic during construction, please try to avoid driving on streets where there is active construction to help reduce congestion and keep everyone safe.

Questions and concerns during the construction process should be directed to Wayne Dabrowski at the Road Commission — 248-858-4862 or wdabrowski@rcoc.org.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this project.
